All of my life I've been told no. It's come in different shapes and forms. Sometimes it feels like a freight train and sometimes it's in foil-wrap with a bow. Sometimes its from co-workers and many times it is from friends and family:
Have you heard this from people, too? No matter how it's presented, it's always the same....an undeniable NO to ideas, movements and efforts that throw barriers in our path.
Lucky for me, my father was Scottish and my mother Hungarian - forming me with an unstoppable force of obstinance and passion. It took me years to see this as a gift. It took support from unlikely places, secret whispers and new voices who told me to push forward and fail. To take chances. To begin a journey without a map. To do what I believe in and stick to my guns. To never accept no and believe wholeheartedly that there's always a way to yes. To finish the race, even if you're last.
In the end, opinions are like belly buttons - Everyone has one but they are unique to how we have grown in our life.
But belief...true belief is powerful. Instead of offering each other our opinions, let's focus on true support and belief. Let's focus on how to support each other to succeed, not all of the reasons that we may fail. Let's roll up our sleeves to work, advocate and cheer. Let's boost each other to fly, not hold each other's feet on the ground where its safe and predictable. And finally, let's raise our daughters and sons, selves and sisters to move forward even if our product is not perfect and our path is not clear. Let's remember to appreciate all each other's belly buttons but never forget that we have our own belly to point us forward in pursuit of our dreams.
Try it today. Make today a "yes" day. Find a way to say yes to your friends, family, neighbors, coworkers and community volunteers. It's okay if yes has a few requirements around it. (Yes, we can get ice cream as soon as your homework is done! hurry up, I want mint chocolate chip. Yes, we can take Katie home, but you and she have to tell me 3 funny things about your day). Remember you are strong, smart and bold and there is always a way to yes.
