By now we've all heard the story of JK Rowlings. Single mom. Trying her best to raise her children. Trying her best to survive while life seemed to be knocking her down. But was it? Could she have found what was burning inside of her without life pushing her out of her comfort zone? Would she have worked so hard if life was easy. The truth is - life isn't easy. Just like her books, there are monsters. And bad people. And unhappy relationships. As an adolescent and teen, there are cesspools that we have to sink or swim through. And, as parents, we have a lot of responsibility to raise smart, strong and bold children. Our children are different. Some have more physical challenges and others may have confidence or mental struggles to overcome. Some are visible and some not so much. But trust me, all of our children and teens have their hills to climb.
What I love about the Harry Potter series is that is helps us remember the light which shines within each of us. Every day is an opportunity to reinforce confidence in our children and belief in ourselves. As a parent, we have a chance to proactively build our children to handle whatever life may throw at them when we're not around. And, how much our love and use of 4 little statements can make a difference in building the magic of imagination, confidence and strength in a child: I believe in you. I trust you. I love you. I won't let you fail.
Your love is the magic. Your love gives your children confidence. Your parenting, even when its strict reinforcement of the rules or holding them to certain standards, gives them strength. Failure is not missing a shot, failing a test, changing friend groups or making a mistake on social media - that is life. Failure is part of life. Success and growing up strong, smart and bold is learning from each failure and getting stronger.
In the third Harry Potter book we are introduced to the magic of the Patronus Charm, a defensive spell which creates a protective guardian around a person that takes the form of an animal. It is a pure, protective magical charm of happiness and hope and confidence that wards away the monsters which prey on our happiness and magnifies our fears. You ARE your child's Patronus and the confidence, love, belief and support that you give to your children helps them develop their own Patronus.
